Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for men and women. Whether for hygienic or cosmetic reasons, laser hair removal is the best solution for those tired of temporary and often painful methods of removing unwanted hair. For convenience and longevity, laser hair removal is the attractive choice.

Laser hair removal is non-invasive, safe and effective to eliminate unwanted hair without damaging surrounding tissues. Unlike many other practices that offer laser therapy, the lasers at Dermatology & Skincare Arts have been specifically chosen to work on dark and tanned skin. Laser hair removal can treat the back, bikini area, chest, face, neck and shoulders.

What is laser hair removal and how many treatments will I need?

Pulses of laser light energy target and kill the follicles in the treated area. However, because hair grows in cycles, only follicles in the active growth phase have enough pigment to absorb the light and destroy the follicle.

Therefore, additional treatments will be needed to kill the follicles that are dormant and become active later. You can expect a 15-20% reduction in the hair after the first treatment. Complete removal may require 5-6 treatments depending on hair thickness, the area treated and the hair’s growth cycle and skin tone. Treatments are usually 4-6 weeks apart. Some hair may regrow after finishing all treatments. This regrowth will be finer and lighter and can be easily managed with maintenance treatments.

At Dermatology & Skincare Arts we offer Primelase, one of the most effective laser hair removal treatments available.

Primelase the latest laser hair removal device.

What is Primelase?

Primelase is one of the most effective diode hair removal treatments on the market. It is fast and effective due to the high power and the targeting of the energy to directly attack the hair follicle and destroy it.

Is Primelase a good laser for all skin tones?

Primelase advanced technology allows it to treat all types of skin tones all year round.

Is Primelase laser painful?

The technology of cold by contact guarantees comfortable treatments while your skin being protected. Primelase laser should not be painful. Some patients may experience discomfort due to the heat from the laser. The settings can be changed if the treatment becomes too uncomfortable.

Is there a downtime?

There is no downtime and you can return to your routine immediately after the treatment.

How does Primelase work?

Primelase uses diode laser technology in order to deliver the most effective hair removal treatment for all skin types maximizing the results while warrantying the integrity and health of your skin. In a very simplified way, our lasers produce a very intense light that is of a specific “color” (wavelength) that selectively and intensively heats the pigments in the hair follicle while avoiding other portions of the skin. Overtime, this heat permanently damages the structures of the hair follicles thus producing a reduction of the visible hair.

How do I know if I am a candidate for Primelase?

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Kandula in Parsippany, New Jersey to determine if you are a good candidate.

Your consultation

At your appointment Dr. Kandula will advise you about your skin, your tendency to scar, how you heal, whether you get cold sores or genital herpes, take retin A or other medications that make you sensitive to the sun.

Your skin will be examined to evaluate the area to be treated, and you will receive specific instructions on how to prepare and to avoid potential side effects.

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

  • Avoid waxing and plucking for at least 2 weeks before each procedure
  • Avoid sun exposure for at least about 6 weeks before each procedure, and six weeks after
  • Shave 2-3 days before the procedure, not before. The hair stubs must be visible for the laser to be effective
  • Long hair will be more painful to remove
  • Do not bleach your hair – mustaches, etc. Dark hair responds best
  • We may prescribe antivirals prior to the procedure
  • Clean your skin and do not use any creams or lotions. Deodorant will be removed before treatment

The Procedure

Your skin will be cleaned in the area to be treated. For sensitive areas, we may apply numbing cream prior to the procedure. It will take about 30 minutes for the gel to work. You must wear protective eyewear during the procedure. The laser light beam will be focused on the area of treatment and vaporizes the hair. Results will be immediately visible.

After your procedure

After the procedure you may experience mild discomfort or a feeling like a sunburn. Common side effects include skin irritation and redness, swelling and temporary pigmentation changes that may last for 2-3 days. You will be advised to avoid sun exposure as it can irritate sensitive skin. Avoid the use of self-tanning lotions as they can induce skin irritation and tinting and excessive heat applied to the area treated such as hot baths, jacuzzi or saunas for a few days after the treatment.
